Nassau County Iftar Program with North East Islamic Community Center in New York
New York Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano gave an Iftar dinner for New York Muslim community. The iftar was at the Governor’s Office, located in Mineola NY. Many community members including A large number of Muslims also attended. Turkish Cultural Center of Long Island (TCCLI) contributed to the program. Iftar started with recitation of Qur’an.
President of Northeast Islamic Community Center (NEICC) Ibrahim Sayar participated in the program as the Key note speaker. His talk was about the rituals of Ramadan. He explained that Muslims fast from sunrise to sun down for a month. During the fasting period Muslims don’t eat or drink and stay away from sensual relationship. And Mr. SavasCetinkaya who is the religious instructure in NEICC New York Branch, mentioned a few verses from Holy Qur’an pointing out that “Fasting was also prescribed for people before you” including Christians and Jews in earlier times.
New York State Assemblyman David McDonough attended the Iftar program and said Muslims and especially Turkish Community did great contributions to American life here in Nassau County. He said that he is very pleased that Community came together for such an event and congratulated everyone involved in this organization.
Another New York State Assemblyman Tom Mc Kevitt also attended iftar dinner. He pointed out that he is the new assembly member and this is his first iftar in this setting. He was very pleased with the attendance and solidarity in the Muslim community. He promised to be part of these events in the years to come.
Some community members received recognition by the County Executive office for their contributions.
Program ended with delicious food served.
