THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD “AYAH” (VERSE), THE SEQUENCE AND NUMBER OF VERSES IN THE QUR’AN

The meaning of the word “ayah” is miracle, a sign or evidence. The   terminological meaning of the word “ayah” is a revelation comprising of one or more sentences. The order of the ayahs, the beginning, end, and instruction of which ayahs belonged to which surah was again related personally by the noble Prophet.

According to general opinion, the number of ayahs is 6,666. However, although different figures may be obtained according to the principles of counting, the majority opinion regarding the number of ayahs is 6,236.
