Definition of Exegesis (Tafsir): This is a branch of science which explains the Qur’an, the Book of Allah in a manner which people are able to understand.
The purpose of the Exegesis: The purpose of the exegesis is for the whole of humanity to comprehend and represent the Qur’an in the manner which pleases Allah so they attain happiness both in this world and the Hereafter, and gain the ability of earning the rewards of Allah.
The significance of the Exegesis: There is great reward in reciting the Qur’an, however reciting it alone is not sufficient. It is necessary to unveil this sublime treasure, to understand it and benefit from it. The key to that treasure is the exegesis. An exegesis or commentary is the only means of fully understanding the Qur’an, and the most important point is reading it with understanding. This is the measure of a Muslims progress or decline. During the periods in which the Qur’an was perceived and the people lived in accordance with the spirit and commands of the Qur’an, the Muslims prospered, and in the times when they acted contrary to the Qur’an, they made no progress. Indeed, the holy Qur’an was sent for the believers to understand it.
